Pitching Instruction
By Steven Ellis, former Chicago Cubs pitching pro
If you want to become a better pitcher, it would be beneficial to seek out some professional pitching instruction. There are several ways to do this such as with a good pitching coach, and with pitching camps.
A good pitching coach is trained to take your current mechanics and make slight tweaks to them in order to produce a better end result. These coaches know many drills that can help with mechanical problems, as well as help make you throw harder.
Finding an experienced pitching coach can be difficult, so you may need to ask around. Be sure the pitching coach you find is well qualified to teach pitchers your age. If you are a 15 year old, don't seek the help of a coach who specializes with 9-10 year olds. This won't help you much.
Another good way to receive quality pitching instruction is with pitching camps or clinics. Many colleges will hold pitching camps for players to attend. These camps can be a great way to receive top-notch instruction, as well as get your name out to college coaches.
Sometimes different associations or independent pitching coaches will host pitching clinics. These clinics vary in length from one day, to several days. Many times they will be categorized by age group, so make sure to find one that suits your needs.
Use caution when signing up for camps and clinics. Many of these camps are very expensive. I generally avoided going to college camps unless I was very interested in the school. Some colleges use their camp to make money for the baseball program.
