Pitching Instructors
By Steven Ellis, former Chicago Cubs pitching pro
Sometimes a pitcher needs to use a good pitching instructor to reach the next level of hi game. A well trained pitching instructor knows how to teach pitchers to reach their maximum potential.
There is a big difference between a baseball coach and a pitching instructor. Not every coach knows how to teach pitchers. A qualified and experienced pitching instructor is more useful to a pitcher than a general coach is.
To find a good pitching instructor, talk to your fellow pitchers, coaches, and other baseball friends to see if they know of any good pitching instructors. Many pitching instructors get clients by word of mouth, so don't be afraid to speak up. Make sure this pitching instructor is well qualified. Find out who he has coached before, and go talk to those players.
Don't always assume that a former professional pitcher will be a good pitching instructor. Just because a pitcher played in the Major Leagues doesn't mean he will be a good pitching instructor. A good pitching instructor will be able to take your current mechanics and make them better.
Once you find a pitching instructor, make sure they are fixing your mechanics, not changing them altogether. A good instructor should be able to take your current mechanics and make slight tweaks to them to produce a good finished product. Be wary when a pitching instructor tries to completely change all of your mechanics to fit their cookie cutter model of how they think a pitcher should pitch.
